This post might not be eloquently written, or very nice to read but I’m writing it as a mind-dump for when I start my project.
Over the last few days I’ve been researching portrait and candid photography and I want to make a note of useful videos, tutorials, tips and websites so that when I come to actually shooting my project, I can look back at these and try and utilise the lessons.
These were interesting articles that I found simplified the act of asking strangers for a photo:
www.photographymad.com/asking-strangers-to-star-in-your-candid-photos
digital-photography-school.com/how-to-photograph-strangers-the-100-strangers-project/
I also thought this video was interesting, as it’s one thing to read tips and tricks over and over again, but it’s another thing to see real photographers at work putting that advice into practise:
I also read lots of articles on taking portrait photography, and found this one the most interesting:
6 Tips for creating a legacy
I thought that the tips were very interesting and useful, especially since they included examples of work alongside the tips so you could see the photographer utilising them. I will definitely look through this article when constructing my project.
Another article about using light: blog.pictureline.com/
I also liked this video:
I also have three months free on Skillshare – a website offering classes in lots of different things including photography and photojournalism. I took advantage of this trial period and took part in some of the classes. These were some of my favourites:
Understanding aperture and adding drama to your street photos
Portrait Photography on the Street: Connecting with Strangers
Portraits and Places: Photographing People in Their Spaces
Portrait Photography: Working with Natural Light
Documentary Photography: Capturing Places and People
Travel Street Photography: Telling Visual Stories with Powerful Street Photos
I find researching these topics very interesting – I feel like I’ve found something that I really want to learn more about and improve in.
This post will hopefully be useful when doing my project to look back on and take advice and notes from.
