This week we learnt about pitching and started the pitching process for our own photojournalism projects. To see my seminar notes here.
In reflection of this week, I found it very interesting to learn more about something that will hopefully become a normal part of my career once I’ve finished university. I would like to do some freelance work at some point which meant that this week’s seminar was very advantageous.
I enjoyed learning about the pitching process, and I was particularly interested in the Writers and Artists Yearbook that I didn’t even realise existed. It made me excited to eventually start pitching my ideas to real publications – ideas that I’ve been coming up with since being at university. It’s also exciting to finally feel as though I might be able to write some of these ideas eventually, and I also find comfort in the thought of finding smaller publications to start writing for straight away. I learnt more about the process of building up a portfolio slowly in order to eventually write for magazines that I’ve dreamt about working for. It was very interesting and even though the process is obvious, I felt like I was learning the tricks of the trade. 🙂
Not only did I enjoy learning about the pitching process and seeing examples, but I also think I did quite well in researching and pitching my ideas because I was so enthusiastic and excited by the idea. I spent a lot of time researching different magazines and publications, eventually deciding on the one I thought suited best. I can imagine myself immersing myself in this research again in the future when I’m pitching for an actual job rather than for an assignment.
I learn a lot this week, and I am excited to start work on my project properly. I think that this week’s seminar confirmed that I am going to try and pitch my photojournalism project to a publication once it’s finished, as I hope to be very proud of my work when it’s done.
Aims for this week:
- send out feelers for project, eg. email potential sources
- practice with candid photography and editing
