In reflection of this week’s work, I am more excited than ever to start my project.
Week three was mainly about the different types of journalism.
I really enjoyed the seminar as it opened my eyes to the different types of photojournalism that we could explore with our projects – some that I liked and some that I didn’t.
Because of this, the session and the research I have done since has made it clearer in my head of what type of photojournalism I’m interested in including in my project.
I decided that I found documentary photojournalism a lot more interesting and by researching it further, I found that this is something I am very passionate about and something that I would even love to pursue as a career. So I will definitely be basing my project on it.
The research I conducted over this week has made my decisions for my project clearer – I have now decided that I would love to incorporate both documentary portraiture and candid photography somehow in my work.
However, I am still unsure for a subject – so I will spend the next few weeks researching more to try and get inspiration on a more specific area that I can do my project on.

I really enjoyed researching candid photography and documentary portraiture, and even found it interesting to learn the history and origins of some of the skills. Because of how much it helped me with decisions to do with my project, I will be sure to do even more research and experimentation in the coming few weeks.
Projects and artists I was particularly inspired by:
- Pete Souza‘s candid portraits on Obama – I could create similar portraits on a person or number of people. The series brought together showed a side to him that not many other people saw, I could do the same for a place or group of people too (see my research on Pete Souza here)
- Eric Lafforgue‘s idea of representing a country in a series of photographs. I liked how they all linked together to show the culture and overall life lived in a particular country. I could do similar for my project – perhaps on a smaller place or a community (see my research on Eric Lafforgue here)
I would love to produce work similar to either of those projects, and so over the next week or so I will be sure to experiment and think more about a subject that I am passionate about.
In the next few weeks I am excited to start learning some of the more technical sides to photography – so that I can soon start going out and taking lots of photos and start practicing now that I am feeling inspired and passionate about the potential of my project.
I also plan to do a bit more research over the next few weeks. Although I thoroughly enjoyed researching particular types of photojournalism, I would like to perhaps research more in depth about particular artists – to make it easier for myself to take inspiration from their work when creating my own project.

My aims for this week:
- start experimenting with my camera – take photos and see how I get on with photographing people
- research artists that I like more (Pete Souza and other street/candid photographers) – try and get inspiration for own project
- DECIDE ON THE SUBJECT FOR MY PROJECT.
In conclusion, I am not 100% decided on what my project will be on, but from my research I am now a lot closer to finding out as I am confident on the style I would like to follow and the types of images I would like to create. I am also a lot more confident with what type of photography I like and what I don’t like as much – I can aim to get my own project as close as possible to the types of portfolio’s I have researched over the last week.
